This week's question comes from an anonymous submi This week's question comes from an anonymous submission at my podcast page, which you can find at the link in my bio. The short answer is that no missing school due to anxiety is unlikely to help the anxiety but we also talk about other things you can do that might help. If you need help connecting to resources in your area, please contact the Crisis Lifeline at 988.
Next time you're beating yourself up because you h Next time you're beating yourself up because you have a child who only eats buttered noodles or who never listens or who is eight and still won't sleep through the night, know that an undetermined amount of how kids turn out is luck of the draw. You can get help with the rest of it.
We all -- and I mean ALL -- have intrusive thought We all -- and I mean ALL -- have intrusive thoughts sometimes. Thoughts like, "What if I french kissed my dog?" "I could stick my hand in the garbage disposal" "If I step on this crack I'm gonna break my mother's back." Most of us have them and brush 'em off. Maybe they make us feel a little uncomfortable or surprised or embarrassed but they come and they go. But for some of us they get stickier. We worry about them. We try to push them away or make sense of them. Those intrusive thoughts can cause a lot of anxiety. For kids, those intrusive thoughts may drive them to do something -- ignore the dog, never wash dishes, refuse to go for a walk -- to avoid the thought. And sometimes they need to come confess it and maybe the parent starts worrying, too. Is something wrong with my child? Are they safe around the sink? Start by explaining -- these are intrusive thoughts. EVERYONE has them. They are meaningless. If kids keep getting stuck or the intrusive thoughts require more and more elaborate responses, it's time to consider a screening for OCD.

Say it out loud if you'd like, invite your kids to say it, too. I just wanted to reintroduce myself and thank you I just wanted to reintroduce myself and thank you all for following! My name is Dawn and I've been working with kids and families for more than thirty years. Here are my two truths and a lie. Can you guess which one is the lie?

A. I started teaching parenting classes before I had children. The parents would ask me, "So why should we listen to you?" And I'd say, "Because I'm an expert on child development and you're an expert on your child so together we're gonna figure this thing out."

B. I spent time overseas teaching preschool in a German childcare center. I didn't know any German to start so they put me with the toddlers figuring I could learn along with the kids!

C. I used to write for Hooters Magazine under the pseudonym David Fried. I wrote the book reviews. In fact, most of the writers there were women writing under male pseudonyms and we all met on an infertility support listserv.

Ok which do you think ISN'T true? Let me know in the comments!
